2015 Seattle AWIS Awards Banquet

3rd Annual Award Banquet for Scientific Advancement and Early Career Achievement – June 17th, 2015 at The Landing at Northcut from 6-9pm. Complimentary underground parking will be available on both, P1 and P2 levels. Please proceed to the EAST elevator and go up to the 2nd floor.

The Awards Banquet is a semi-formal attire event that will begin at 6pm with a pre-dinner reception. Dinner will be served buffet style and during the course of the evening we will hear talks from each award recipient, as well as participate in the annual scholarship awards ceremony and toast to the 30th Anniversary of the Seattle AWIS Chapter.

This year we will be honoring Dr. Julie Overbaugh with the Award for Scientific Advancement and Dr. Brandi Cossairt with the Award for Early Career Achievement.

Dr. Overbaugh is an accomplished HIV scientist whose research has had a substantial impact on our understanding of HIV transmission and pathogenesis, particularly in high-risk women and infants in resource-limited settings. She has inspired many women scientists from both the US and abroad through mentoring over 60 female graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research technicians throughout her career.

Dr. Cossairt is a new member of the UW’s chemistry faculty where she has established a flourishing research group in 2012. She has identified a unique research area at the interface of inorganic, materials and energy sciences. Dr. Cossairt is working on developing chemical methods to discover new energy efficient technologies, create new renewable energy solutions, and mitigate carbon dioxide emissions, thereby reducing the impact of the non-renewable energy use.

The Seattle AWIS Awards are intended to honor established women in our local scientific community and to further recognize the accomplishments of women in science. We would like to honor these women with a reception-banquet to inspire women in the early stage of their careers.Typically, two inspiring female scientists from the Puget Sound are acknowledged at the event, which also serves as Seattle AWIS’s primary fundraiser to raise money for scholarships that we award to undergraduate women majoring in STEM at a four-year college or university in Washington State.
